Day 7 - Corvallis to Eugene
Location
Rode to Eugene. The scenery was nice, as most of Oregon has been up to this point. Had our first encounter with a cyclist hating local, yelled "Hey douche-ers!" at us in some small town.
Eugene is a pretty nice town. At this point, bigger places are less appealing than the smaller towns we have been rolling through. The Eugene library looked great, but wanted $3 for internet access. Took my bike to a shop nearby and talked to some of the nicest bike shop workers ever. Got my bike fixed for free, and was also pointed in the direction of camping for the night. We consequently decided to head back out of town towards a nearby state park. Upon arrival we were greeted by the campground host. He quickly informed us that the tent camping area of the park was not complete, meaning we would have to pay for and use an RV spot even though we would not be using the hookups. Sounded like a rip-off so we left.
Just down the street was a gigantic Baptist church. Brett and Sean spoke with the Executive Pastor, who pointed us towards a camp next door. Little did we know what lay ahead...
While riding toward Camp Harlow, we were greeted by a couple on bikes. After the last of us rode by, the nice gentleman turned around to greet us. He turned out to be Alex, the caretaker of the camp. After explaining our situation, and asking for a patch of grass to tent on, Alex blew us away by offering up the main lodge of the camp. We walked in to find a giant open area with couches, bathrooms, showers, a kitchen area and bunks. Sleeping pads and bags were quickly spread out and we made ourselves at home. Camp Harlow ended up having a pool/waterslide, miniature golf course, gym, climbing wall, cafe, lodge, horses, trails, and every other summer camp requirement. Needless to say, this was amazing. To top things off, later in the evening we were offered a hot breakfast the next morning. Although this offer was not taken up, it was great knowing what could be.
